Best and worst Webquest

  1. Which two of example WebQuests listed below are the best ones? Why? We chose the Grow Schools green and the Unraveling the Underground Railroads as the two best. Both of these webquest give good information that is detailed and good eye catching pages.
  2. Which two are the worst? Why? We chose Ancient Egypt webquest and We All Scream for Ice Cream as the two worst Webquests. Both webquest did not give enough information for the topics and was boring to look at.
  3. What do best and worst mean to you? Best means to me something that I am going to be able to learn from and get great resourceful information about my topic. Worst means that I am not going to gain information from a unclear topic and it doesn't give a lot of information.

WebQuests Worksheet

Your Role
___Efficiency Expert
___Affiliator
__X_Altitudinist
___Technophile
Your Impressions
WebQuest
Strengths
Weaknesses
Grow School Greens
You are able to use many programs within the computer and also websites. Example: power point, excel.
It gives you what you should be able to do at the end of the time frame given.

Give too much information within the teachers view, could have cut some things out. Example would have been how other subjects fall into play.
I think they should have already asked the principle for permission to build a garden before all the time and effort put forth.

Where is My Hero?
Just enough details for the project. Does not overload their brain with unwanted information. Gives an outline to what needs to be done and the grading scale for that.  Gives a good worksheet for which one you chose.

It states could use 2 Presidents from the list but there are only 3 on the list.
Should be able to pick a hometown hero and search for that also, not everyone who is a hero is as famous as some that are listed. Some are not even heroes.

Underground Railroad
The evaluation sheet that they have.

Could have combined the two topic and websites to look up together.
Could use a little more information

Ice Cream

Gives them skills to use a few programs from the computer. Gives web pages to guide you

The site is to boring, not a lot to do per say.

Ancient Egypt

This site is not very good at all.

Top Ten Video

The activities I engaged in were different from when I was in school. When I was in school we did not use technology, except for research and that was very seldom. They were the same as far as polls and research but it was all done in class with books and magazines. We were never given a rubric to use to follow through. My learning style is addressed in this activity, I am a better learner by hands on and group work. The students actually got to participate and help make the voki and be part of this activity. I am not suprised that this class did not use a textbook. Technology has come a long way, and textbooks are not always up to date and may have some false information since it takes a few years to publish. I would be interested in becoming a teacher that uses technology like this, that way students won't get bored easy and the shy person can get involved and enjoy the class just like the normal outgoing student. One barrier can be a family that does not use technology or are not able to afford these ammentites for their children. Some children will shy away from these items, just try to enforce its ok for them to use this. Another concern could be the students that are not that good at technology may not want to do this.

Blogging view

In the beginning of the semester I enjoyed blogging and kind of looked forward to it by giving our thoughts to the way we think about things. More into the semester it has gotten boring and I do not enjoy it anymore, there are times where it takes everything I have to sign on to complete assignments. This is the only time I blog and never blogged before then. So maybe it was just because of the idea of doing something new, I dunno.
I do not believe that you can become a more effective teacher due to the fact that you blog. It can bring intrest into some subjects and ideas, but what really makes you an effective teacher? It is the way you teach and not what you write into a blog. I have more respect towards my teachers in grade school and jr. high compared to college professors. This is due to the fact of hands on teaching and them being there for us at anytime when we need to ask questions. Technology is coming  to stay, but I think that some go over board with it and thats all they want to use.
After this class I will not continue to blog, I don't have time to. Being in school full time and motherly duties blogging will be the last thought on my mind. If I had more time and thought more about it I would, sometimes it is good to stay away from the technology because no matter where you are and what  you are doing it is everywhere.
I believe that collective intelligence is a new way for media literacy. In this class we have used this by reading articles and giving our feedback. We have been able to share with our class and also others who would want to view this blog. It is also a way for that shy person to get his or her thoughts out there and not be afraid.

Statistical activities

According to this graph the most peaked class is the special education in level 1.
The least peaked are the Aisans in category 1, level 1.
This is a bimodal score.

Excel

After looking at the line graphs of American and Japanese Math scores, it shows that the American math scores are positive skewed and the Japanese are negative skewed. The American graph shows the right tail is longer, which means it has few high values. The Japanese graph shows the left tail is longer, which means it has few low values. Leptokurtic or platykurtic you may ask; the American has a relatively peaked distribution making it leptokurtic, and the Japanese is widely dispersed making it platykurtic.

Teaching Media Literacy

QUOTE:  Today's digital media literacy encompasses many additional topics, from using search engines, to creating Web sites and online profiles, to participating in social networking. One of the most basic strands of media literacy emphasizes the skills and knowledge students need to locate and critically assess online content.

MY THOUGHT: I agree with this quote 100%, if you have a teacher that is willing to go the extra mile to teach students how to do this why not take it. Many teachers will go above and beyond the basic teaching methods and teach further into the subject and hope that they will use this new knowledge. I am glad that our teacher goes the extra mile to teach us sites or programs that we can use and access at home. I have always been on facebook or myspace back when it was popular, but I knew nothing about blogging until this class. I am glad that we use this because a person can write their thoughts and share them with people and get their feedback. This could be helpful for those that don't have anyone to talk to, and sometimes its easier to talk to a stranger. I am learning alot about media technology that I didn't know about, and I hope to continue to learn new things.

SEVEN POWER LENS

THOUGHT:
With this quote I agree that we have a large percentage of children online, even more than the 75% in 2002. Technology has taking a toll on society that we think we have to have it to get by. There are school districts that are partnered up with local cable and internet providers that will give low income status families a computer with internet service around 10 dollars. I also agree that the 90's generation are more unsupervised then any other generation. This could be the fact that parents don't care what their children do, they want them out of our hair or it could just be parents trust them. Either way I believe that children need to be supervised, if not so many bad things can happen that can be prevented if you would just take that extra mile to see what your kids are doing.

Picture thoughts

People Objects  Activities
Guys with binoculars American flag, radar, balcony Looking out at sea, on  a mission
Guy looking out at sea with binoculars in hand Balcony, radar, another flag of some sort  Ready to “attack”
Guys walking smiling having a good time, looking down, guy in back at a crane. Boat, ocean
Talking up a storm, enjoying time
Guys determined, talking in thought In deep thought, worried, on a mission. More worried than the ones on the left.

President Barack Obama is briefed on the BP oil spill relief efforts in the Gulf Coast region earlier in June.

 People Objects  Activities
President Greenery, maybe a garden or outside of a window In deep thought, thinking I did something wrong what do I do now, maybe thinking he is done and worried that there is nothing he can do now to fix it.

 People Objects  Activities

If I had to choose between the two pictures I would choose the second one. In the first picture it looks like he is having a great time with no care in the world besides the moment that he is in with his friends. In the second picture it seems as if he is in a deep thought and that he is focused and concerned about a situation that is going on. I know that I want to have a leader that is going to be there when things get tuff and get things done in a timely manner.

Storytelling lesson plan

The digital storytelling program is a program to help enhance learning, teaching, or personal use. You are able to tell a story with pictures, music and captions and it also helps you get a point across. I have used story telling in a personal prespective and in a memorial perspective. I would recommend anyone to use this program, it is an easy program to use and an enjoyable one to do. With storytelling and ISTE NETS-T we can use and promote many experiences with both of these programs. Both programs help to inspire students to new learnings, they can use digital learning experiences, and promote and model digital citizenship. They may promote learning in the future in the classroom by doing more lessons and activities by using these programs. It can and hopefully will hold the attention span of students longer than what a "normal" classroom lesson would. I know that in school with some lessons I think this would have been much better than listening to boring lectures. Students may be more willing to reach their potential and take that next step to technology that they were afraid to do before.

Lesson Plan:
My classroom would be making their own poems about their family. When they are done writing a peom they would use storytelling to actually tell the poem. They would use pictures of their choice along with text of their poem. I think the sudents will enjoy using this and making a movie that can represent his or her family.

COPYRIGHT

THOUGHT:
Yes, students can post their multimedia project to you tube, they must have a copyright notice and also a citation on their video. However if you tube was an unsecured website they would not be allowed to do so. Yes there is a limit to the amount of pictures and or videos and music used in a multimedia project. According to the article "Copyright in an Electronic Environment", illustrations are no more than 5 images of an artists or photographers work. If you are using a collection there will be no more than 10% or 15 images, which ever is less/ Also according to this article the following is in play with music; up yo 10% of copyrighted musical composition, but no more than 30 seconds, up to 10% of a body of sound recording, but no more than 30 seconds, and no alterations of any sort. Students and educators do not need to ask for permission to use copyrighted materials as long as it falls under the fair use guidelines.

Digital Storytelling

QUOTE:
As with any art form, digital story-telling continues to evolve to accommdate new technologies, purposes, and creative visions. The important question for educators to ask is, "What does digital storytelling offer education?" The answer is "a great deal," if we do two things: focus on the story first and the digital medium later; and use digital storytelling to enhance students' skills in critical thinking, expository writting, and media lieracy.

THOUGHT:
My thought on this quote brings me back to the question of "What does digital storytelling offer education?" It can bring a lot on the plate as far as learning and teaching. As a teacher you will have days that you will have to miss for various reasons. You could use storytelling as a lesson for when you are not there. Yes you would still have a substitute, but step it up a notch and teach via stories. As a  learning experience for students, you could have them come up with their own lesson and let them teach it to the class using this. I know as a teacher I will use this tool a lot.

They keyboard solution

Quote:
And so it is rather bizarre that the first widespread change in how people spell English words appears to have come from a group of (largely) young people sending text messages to one another with cellular phones and other electronic devices. You may not like seeing the phrase “LOL — U R gr8” on the page, but it is common enough that you are likely to understand it. Why have such inadvertent “reforms” succeeded where generations of dedicated intellectual attempts have not? And will they last?

My Thought:
I believe that many generations before did not succeed for many reasons. Society is an ever changing thing in everything we do from jobs to technology. Many older people may not have fought for what they wanted and possibly gave up. If they would have kept at what they were doing and put it out there they may have gotten what they wanted with the spelling of different words. I know that many words have different meaning and spellings for those meanings so in a way they did get that. I believe that in a way todays generation uses these abbrevations possibly due to laziness. I know that is one reason why I use them, sometimes I am in a hurry and just want to get done texting or instant messaging. Someone will still be using these 10 years from now, if not something better.

After taking this test I have learned that I am a Multimodal learner, with the following scores: visual 7, aural 6, read/write 8 and kinesthetic 8. With this learning I am among 60% of the population. For being a visual learner I learn better from graphs, pictures, and slides. I am not one into the text books, they put to much information in the book that does not belong there. As a aural learner, I do attend class regularly, and take notes thats not always clear notes for myself to read and sometimes I get myself lost in trying to figure out what I am talking about. My reading and writing learning I read the book or handouts and also write notes or outlines about what I read. I honestly thing that this is the best way that I learn. Kinesthetic learning I always combine everything I do, it maybe be 1 or more of each category but I do use them all. I do believe that my learning test was accurate, I am more of a hands on and reading short material compared to reading and cramming of long boring text books.

digital media changing language???

QUOTE:
Another form of control on mobiles is deciding whether to talk or text. I might choose to send a text message rather than call to keep the communication short (meaning, "I don't want to get bogged down in a conversation in which I'm obligated to listen to what you have to say"). In cross-cultural research I conducted last year, more than one-third of the Swedish, U.S., and Italian university students I surveyed said "keeping the message short" was an important reason for texting rather than talking.

MY THOUGHT:

I believe that this is so true. I know that I look at my phone and see who is calling me and if I really don't want to talk to that person I won't answer it. If it is someone that I can text I will in a heartbeat. There is something about texting that I would much rather text then talk. I know that the older generation of my family HATES the fact that we text instead of talking. If the older generations would have been introduced to this technology sooner I believe they would have been fine with it. My grandma will sometimes asks me to text someone and see how someone is doing, and she is 78 and knows that it is part of who this generation became. The only bad part that the texting has to offer to us is texting while driving. I know that I do this and I have almost got in an accident or two, but I have calmed down with it. Texting has come to be a way of living for some and it is here to stay for a while.

What is poll everywhere and wordle?

In this class we used poll everywhere to determine what words we were going to use to create our wordle. Poll everywhere we asked a question to the class, and they answered it creating a word list for the owner of the poll. We then took the answers and created our wordle, the answers were created into the wordle with the most frequent answers being bigger and bolder and so on.
By being a teach I would use these tools in the classroom as much as possible to make the class not so boring. I think it will get students out there to use these and make it easier on projects by getting the feedback they would need. Students don't always get to have the ability to explore these areas, escpecially if they don't know about them. I know that I did not learn about any of these until this semester when taking this class. I am glad that I was able to explore these options to bring into my classroom, and hopefully to promote these skills to other students.
With my Education focusing on FACS I would use polls everywhere to ask the students what type of project they would like to engage in for their sewing project. With this I would still let the student pick their individual projects, but let them see as a class what the overall choices were. I would include the poll and wordle into a powerpoint lecture and let them see how this worked. I would then have them use these tools later on as a group project.

Education Needs a Digital Upgrade

QUOTE: "Chances are just that good that, in spite of anything you do, little Oliver or Abigail won’t end up a doctor or lawyer — or, indeed, anything else you’ve ever heard of. According to Cathy N. Davidson, co-director of the annual MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competitions, fully 65 percent of today’s grade-school kids may end up doing work that hasn’t been invented yet."

REACTION: As a parent of a child in grade school this hits close to me. When you have children you want them to be the best that they can be, and never give up on their dreams. How can a child have a dream and then that dream be shattered for the simple fact that 65% of our children may end up doing jobs that have yet to be invented. My child already has the career choice chosen, and he can reach that with the support of family, friends and teachers. I just hope that the school board will keep technology into the school systems and not hold anything back. My child does work on the computer that helps him with math, reading, spelling, writing and applied subjects.

About Me

My name is Melissa, I was born and raised in Morgantown West Virginia. As  a teacher I would like to teach FACS in the middle and high school levels. Children learn from those who actually care about them. You can not go into a hands on field without not caring about who you are working for. Children young or old look up to us as a role model, and we need to keep that because we maybe the only person they trust. In a classroom setting I would be more of a hands on teacher as much as possible. I would have cook-off's for the cooking class. With this the students would prepare the meals, while their peers would have a score sheet and score how well they did. There would be prizes of extra credit handed out to all teams. For the sewing part of class I would have each student make a quilt panel, then the class as a whole would make a blanket that would be given to an ederly person that students submitted their name. I hope that I become a teacher that students look up to.
