Another form of control on mobiles is deciding whether to talk or text. I might choose to send a text message rather than call to keep the communication short (meaning, "I don't want to get bogged down in a conversation in which I'm obligated to listen to what you have to say"). In cross-cultural research I conducted last year, more than one-third of the Swedish, U.S., and Italian university students I surveyed said "keeping the message short" was an important reason for texting rather than talking.
MY THOUGHT:
I believe that this is so true. I know that I look at my phone and see who is calling me and if I really don't want to talk to that person I won't answer it. If it is someone that I can text I will in a heartbeat. There is something about texting that I would much rather text then talk. I know that the older generation of my family HATES the fact that we text instead of talking. If the older generations would have been introduced to this technology sooner I believe they would have been fine with it. My grandma will sometimes asks me to text someone and see how someone is doing, and she is 78 and knows that it is part of who this generation became. The only bad part that the texting has to offer to us is texting while driving. I know that I do this and I have almost got in an accident or two, but I have calmed down with it. Texting has come to be a way of living for some and it is here to stay for a while.

I definitely agree that texting is here to stay--it's a part of technology that allows us to communicate much faster, and convenience is the driving force behind a lot of the newer technologies! Some older people are adjusting well to this change (like my parents and grandparents) while many others still have problems with it.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way when it comes to answering my phone...guilty as charged. Texting while driving? Well, we'll leave that one alone ;)
YES ! Textinf is her for good. There is no turning back with that part of technology. Texting is a way of life anymore. I dont think i could go one day without texting ! and i agree with u about older people. Some of my family ( my grandparents) always give me crap about texting all the time. They always tell me that talking on the phone or face to face is better way to communicate but i am just to the point where they can get over it ! haha .. and texting in driving .. im against .. that how i lost my first car and i dont think i will ever do it again :/
ReplyDeleteTexting is easier, faster, and allows you to avoid the annoying small talk you feel that you have to go through when talking on the phone. Texting allows you to have multiple conversations going on at once and not have to pay more or less attention to one than another. Texting is a great way to communicate but shouldn't be done while driving.
